Critical games coming up

Celtic Quick News posted an interesting message about the team's current form. I guess the criticism of the pessimistic fans includes me. But I think CQN is too quick to claim that we've turned a corner. Better to judge that in 10 days time, after we have played Aberdeen (tomorrow), Hearts (next Saturday) and Spartak (following Wednesday). Three victories and the pessimists were wrong; three defeats and they were right; anything in-between and there is some truth on both sides.

  1. I agree that the jury is still out on the current Celtic side. Two good results have been garnered rectly, but one - Falkirk - was achieved after an unimpressive start and defensive frailty, and was cemented by the rarity of a referee giving us the benefit of a 50/50 decision. Nakamura, 3-1 and game over. The mettle of the team might have been tested going into the last 15 mins at 2-1 with each team at a full complement of 11 players.

The other - for all that it was a great result - was actually a draw and will mean nothing if we don't complete the job at Celtic Park. This is not guaranteed although we are in a good position. Liverpool and Boavista were probably well satisfied with their 1-1 draws at Parkhead in 2003 but we remember what the final outcome was ton both od those occasions. OK an away draw with an AC Milan or Barcelona would be worth getting excited about (results we have achieved in the recent past over 90 minutes) but Spartak Moscow are not of that calibre.

I agree the CQN article does come across as prematurely triumphalist and while I admit I am at the head of the queue to lampoon the Laptop Loyal for their annual "Gers are back stronger than ever" pre-season propaganda, I'm not convinced Celtic have moved forward from last season whilst TFOD have made some progress (they could hardly be any worse).

In fact this level of excitement over a couple of short term results is the kind of stuff we've come to expect from the Huns and Laptop Loyal i.e. PLG and the lads turned more corners than Michael Schumacher last season.

No doubt the papers and Radio Snide will go into a three day orgasmic meltdown over today's Hun result which will be further fuelled if we drop any points at Aberdeen.

So in essence, CQN - keep your powder dry!
