Photos from Florida

Here are some photos of Florida. Margaret and I went there earlier this month for a couple of weeks. We had a great time. We were there 15 years ago but this time we had no kids.

  1. Nice photos. I had never thought of going to Florida but I know a lot of people go. I thought it was mainly to Disney. Your photos show that there's obviously a lot more to it. The place looks really clean but what surprised me was that there seemed to be very few people around.

I see you're like me when it comes to wildlife - big bird, blue bird. No don't tell me - that's their actual names.

  2. I was in Florida about 12 years ago and thought it was a shithole.

Places like Orlando are just strip malls with the "attraction" being Disney and Universal Studios.

Walt Disney was to the right of Joseph McCarthy, a union bashing, capitalist meglomaniac. I always think its ironic that parents purchase his merchandise for their kids.

I drove from Orlando, to Miami and then on to Naples. Naples was less commercial and was my favourite place in Florida, but most of the rest of the state is flat and nondescript, great if you like swamps.

Its a place I would never go back to. I prefer the New England states with Vermont being my favourite.

However, I would never go to the USA now after its record in Iraq. I know its always been a warmonger but one of the ways that I think that we should show our contempt of the US government is not to spend our holidays there, propping up their economy, subjecting ourselves to the invasive customs and allowing additional data to be created on their databases.

I know its hard not to prop up their economy, when I buy a CD, some of that money may be going back to them, but I do think that if the link is obvious we should not be doing it.

One of the ways we can make a difference in the globalised economy is through our purchasing power.

Well thats the lecture over Bobby. Can you make sure you run your next holiday destination by me for approval.

  3. Gerry - I haven't a clue when it comes to birds. :-)

Billy - Parts of Orlando are not very nice but we found lots of alternative places to visit (nature parks, wildlife reserves, old towns etc.) all within an hours drive of our hotel. The wildlife we saw was amazing. I'm putting together a blog ("Alternative Orlando") which might convince you that there's more to the place than you experienced. I agree with your ethical concerns about visiting the US right now - but clearly not enough to stop me going. I think I'll go to Orkney this summer. ;-)
